The Seiko 'Black Series' Grows, With New Diver And Solar Chronograph
New Releases

Seiko Unveils New “Black Series” Watches: King Turtle Diver and Solar Chronograph

Seiko has expanded its “Black Series” collection with two new releases: the SRPK43 King Turtle Diver and the SSC923 Solar Chronograph. Priced at $725 and $700, respectively, both watches feature stainless steel cases with hard coating and ceramic bezels. The King Turtle Diver, powered by the Seiko 4R36 movement, boasts a substantial 45mm size, uni-directional bezel, screw-down crown, and 200m water resistance. On the other hand, the Solar Chronograph offers a more compact 41.4mm size, six months of power on a full charge, and various chronograph functions with 100m water resistance.

Seiko has opted for a matte grey/black dial in these releases, departing from the textured dial seen in the previous “Black Series” watches. The watches are set to hit the market in February 2024, adding to the brand’s diverse lineup.

While the releases showcase Seiko’s commitment to black-themed watches, some enthusiasts may miss the textured dial found in the earlier models. The Solar Chronograph, in particular, is viewed as a decent addition to the lineup, but the removal of the textured dial leaves it feeling somewhat flat. The King Turtle Diver, with its larger size and entirely black color scheme, draws comparisons to the iconic “AP-Offshore-End-Of-Days.”

In terms of specifications, the watches include features like LumiBrite on hands and indexes, various subdials, and water resistance ranging from 100m to 200m. The movements vary, with the King Turtle Diver housing the 4R36 automatic movement with a 41-hour power reserve, while the Solar Chronograph operates on solar charging with a six-month power reserve.

Seiko enthusiasts will have the opportunity to explore these new releases in February 2024, with prices set at $725 for the King Turtle Diver and $700 for the Solar Chronograph. Despite the absence of a limited edition designation, these additions contribute to Seiko’s diverse range of timepieces, providing options for those seeking black-themed watches with distinctive features.
